Has it already been a week? Last week I posted a self-portrait for week one of a 52 week project. Well, here we go with week two! Remember to go to the bottom of this post, to start a tour of our group of amazing photographer’s and their week two! This week’s theme is Black & White. Black & White images are great for showing emotion, and really focusing what is going on in an image. I love using Black & White to showcase images with strong, stark lines and detailed textures. But Black and Whites are also great for soft dreamy images, like this one of Logan loooking out the window in his fur hat {dreaming of Spring??}.

Up next, see how Leah sees in Black and White!

So far January has been windy and cold–no surprise, I live in Wyoming! After being in Arizona for most my life, I still find below freezing temperatures a bit shocking!! Add bone chilling wind, and I pretty much hide inside most the day! Last week we got a nice break from school–as the newly built elementary school opened this morning, and the teachers needed a few days to transfer classrooms. It was nice not scraping ice off my windshield at 7am, and letting my two boys sleep in as long as they wanted (I lucked out with boys that don’t wake up at the crack of dawn). We had some fun play dates, a birthday party, and a game night thrown in there too. Since it has been too cold to be outside taken pics, I have had a lot of fun finding pockets of light inside! My three year old continues to model for me–even when I don’t have my camera around–and my six year old continues to hate having his photo taken, can you tell?

I have joined a group of twenty wonderful photographers, in another 52 week project. Each week there is a different theme to help us stretch our creativity and express our love for photography. The fun thing about this project is that under my post will be a link to another photographer, who will also link to another photographer until it brings you full circle back to here! It is an incredible idea, and I am thrilled to be a part of this group of amazing ladies. Don’t miss out, be sure to keep clicking!

This weeks theme is a self-portrait. Anyone who knows me, knows that this is extremely uncomfortable for me. Isn’t the whole point of being a photographer to not be in the photos?? Let alone post them for the world to see. As uncomfortable as it is, it didn’t take me long to decide how to photograph myself. Sitting on the couch reading a magazine with a stack of my favorite books and a cup of coffee nearby. I am not laying on the couch because at any minute one of my two boys will inevitably interrupt me, and I will have to abandon this moment! This photo was fun to take, I just set my camera on the kitchen table and used my new remote to trigger the shutter!

Everyone’s posts should be up by this evening, head to Launa Valente Photography to begin the tour!

I woke up to a thick blanket of snow on the ground. My oldest son doesn’t have school today, so I decided to let my “baby” sleep in and stay home. I can’t believe he will be four this spring. In so many ways he is still my baby, getting carried around, snuggled up, and being adored for all the cute, funny things he says. But in the next moment, he is wrestling his big brother, demanding (and rarely getting to) play video games, and talking about concepts I didn’t realize he understood. But, I think it is obvious that he will always be my baby!

The theme this week was “what defines you” without capturing any people–and making your photo black and white! Every morning this week, I have thought about this assignment, as I stare in the mirror putting on my make-up. What defines me has changed over the years–from student to employee, from wife to mother. As for objects, I would say a camera is a huge part of my life, but it is hard to take a picture of my camera with my camera. I decided that my make-up, while not necessary to survival, not loved like my family and children, and really quite shallow, helps define me, as I do not feel myself and ready for the day until I put a little on! It goes with me on overnight trips, along with my children and camera:) It makes me feel a little better, a little prettier, and a little more confident everyday!

“Have I told you that you are creative?” begins President Barack Obama’s of Thee I Sing, a tribute to thirteen influential Americans, written in the form of a letter to his daughters. Inspirational and promising, this book reminds us of all the positive values of being an American. A timely read for our family, as we spent the weekend watching and listening to the tragedy unfold in our hometown of Tucson, Arizona. Our thoughts are with all the victims (including some fellow UHS alumni) and their families, as well as the entire community and nation.

To my family, “have I told you that I love you?”

One of my photography goals this year is to shoot more creatively! And as the New Year approached, with temperatures hovering at zero and darkness inside and out, I honestly didn’t feel too motivated to create anything. However, a few of my favorite photography blogs mentioned starting weekly projects for the New Year. I have joined a Project 52 led by Sandi Bradshaw, taking a photo a week with a specific topic (this week is a self-portrait). You can see all the entries on Sandi’s Facebook page. Happy Week One!

UPDATED to add: My little guy is #540! Please check out I Heart Faces and cast a vote!

I Heart Faces, one of the many inspiring photography blogs I follow, is having a fun contest to kick off the New Year!! You have to pick one–yes, just one–of your favorite photos from the past year that feature a (human) face!!!

Okay, I am trying to not over think this, but I keep going back and forth through all the wonderful faces I have had the opportunity to capture last year! Update: I let my husband pick a recent favorite and he chose this one–our youngest son splashing in the bath. We have a shower door and a very small tub, so I stood on the edge of the bath and surprised him, haha! Though this wasn’t in the list of contenders I was originally picking from, I love it for the fact it showcases the type of photos I love best–ones with real emotions! My photography goal for 2011 is to capture more real moments. The little things that make our days, speak of the love between families and couples, and capture what we might forget in a few years from now!

I had the opportunity to photograph my youngest sister and her greyhound, Ally, while we were in Tucson this winter. Jessica and her husband live in San Diego, so it was a treat to be able to spend quality time with her this winter. We had fun getting coffee, trying on make-up, and playing with all the boy/nephews. We didn’t have a lot of room to capture the true Ally (running) off her leash, but we sure had fun, and Jessica makes a gorgeous model!
