CU Boulder Grad Photos: When to Book + What to Bring for the Perfect Session

Graduating from CU Boulder is such a big moment—and your grad photos should feel just as meaningful as the season you’re closing. If you’re planning ahead for next year (which is smart), here’s everything you need to know about timing your session and what to bring so it feels effortless, fun, and completely you.

When Should You Take Your CU Grad Photos?

The short answer: earlier than you think.

The most popular time for CU Boulder grad sessions is mid-April through mid-May, when campus comes alive—trees are blooming, the light is soft, and everything has that fresh spring energy.

That said, the best sessions usually happen when:

  • You book 6–8 weeks in advance
  • You shoot on a weekday evening for the best light and fewer crowds
  • You plan around your schedule before finals hit (trust me, you’ll thank yourself)

If you want more flexibility and a more relaxed experience, consider:

  • Late March for a quieter campus and early spring feel
  • Early May for peak greenery and that iconic Boulder glow

Golden hour (about an hour before sunset) is always my go-to—it gives you that warm, sun-soaked look that feels timeless and natural.

What to Bring to Your Grad Session

Think of your session as a mix of polished + personal. You don’t need a ton, just a few thoughtful pieces.

1. Your Cap + Gown
This is a must—but we won’t shoot in it the whole time. I like to mix it in so your gallery still feels elevated and not overly formal.

2. Something to Wear Underneath That Feels Like You
A dress, jeans and a cute top, something classic and comfortable. Neutrals and soft tones photograph beautifully on campus and won’t compete with the scenery.

3. Comfortable Shoes (and a Backup Pair)
We’ll walk a bit between locations, so bring something easy to move in. You can always change into dressier shoes for photos.

4. Personal Touches
These are what make your session feel like your story:

  • Champagne or a fun drink to pop
  • A college sweatshirt or letter jacket
  • Flowers
  • Anything tied to your major or college experience

5. Hair + Makeup Touch-Up Items
Boulder can be breezy, and a quick touch-up goes a long way. Lip gloss, a brush, or powder is perfect.

  • Steam your gown ahead of time (wrinkles show more than you think)
  • Clean your shoes if they’ll be visible
  • Bring a friend to hype you up or hold your things (optional, but fun)
  • Trust the process—you don’t need to know how to pose, that’s my job

Your grad session isn’t just about documenting that you graduated—it’s about capturing this in-between moment. The excitement, the pride, the little bit of “what’s next?” energy.

The best photos happen when you’re relaxed, present, and just enjoying it.

If you’re planning ahead for next year, I’d love to photograph this season for you.
