Fall is the busiest time of year for outdoor family photography in Boulder! The majority of my weekends and evenings are spent with my beautiful clients while the rest of my time is behind the computer editing their gorgeous galleries! After fifteen years of busy season, here are my top three tips to avoid overwhelm and stay excited and refreshed to see all of the amazing families on my calendar!
Prioritize: I don’t post sneak peeks or recent work on social media when I am in the thick of things! I focus on one gallery at a time, so I can get the entire gallery of images in the family’s hand for them to preview and enjoy first! Social media and marketing take a back seat for now, which also prevents me from mindless scrolling. And when things slow down, I am always so excited to share all of my fall images on Instagram!
Boundaries and Breaks: Implementing an online calendar has been a game-changer! At the beginning of the season, I mark out any important family events that I can’t miss! I also highly recommend taking one or two weekends completely off for fall activities and traditions you want to enjoy with your own family. In the middle of the busy season, it can be hard to turn down sessions, but if you have those times pre-determined it’s easier to carve special time with your own family (and gives a little wiggle room if you have to reschedule for illness, etc.).
Self-Care: We do our best work as artists when we feel our best! Make sure to get outside for a walk while the weather is nice, or treat yourself to a fun coffee while you edit. I love listening to audiobooks while I drive to sessions too! Be kind to yourself and remember in a few short weeks you will have more balance!
